Top 10 RPG’s:
1 ) Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay
The first RPG I ever owned and in my opinion still
the best. The Warhammer World is something I know
a lot about from my war gaming roots and this RPG
adds another level to my tabletop games. An all round
fantastic game. The second edition is also a really
great book and they have done enough work, but also
left enough alone to let me keep it firmly welded
to the number one spot. Excellent.
2) Star Wars (D20)
The highest new entry to my top 10. I have always
tried to play a mix of fantasy and sci-fi games in
our sessions and what is more sci-fi than Star Wars?
I'm not a huge fan of the D20 license and I don't
think I ever will be. I kind of like the idea of 'one-system-under-god'
(god being WoTC) - but just not D20. However they
have done a great job with Star Wars and I'm not sure
anyone else could have produced such spanking gorgeous
books. For that I give them their dues, well done
chaps.
3 ) SLA Industries
The grim corporate future in SLA is probably my favourite
setting of all time. Adventures are really easy to
come up with and as you rise through the ranks of
SLA it just gets better and better.
4) Deadlands: The Weird
West
It was about time we had a really good Wild West game
and the added ‘weird’ twist Pinnacle have
given to Deadlands makes it a winner. I've never run
this game but it has accounted for a lot of my playing
time over the years.
5) Call of Cthulhu
Call of Cthulhu and Dungeons & Dragons are in
my opinion the two really big RPG’s - and of
the two I have always been a Cthulhu kind of guy.
I like the mystery/clue/ancient-text style of play
and in dark of the night, with the lights turned down
low this game really comes into its own.
6) Vampire: The Masquerade
Probably the White Wolf game I have played the most,
and hey… you get to be a Vampire! I think in
time Vampire: The Requiem may replace this though
as I have been reading the new books and it looks
ok so far.
7) Feng Shui
I have the original of this game and I have loved
it right from the start. I love the no holds barred
action it provides and the more stereotypical hero-types
the game tends to lean towards.
8) Noir - the roleplaying
game of film noir
A very original game and above all else a realistic
change too many of the other games. This is gradually
being replaced by the new .pdf game by Deep 7 - Mafia
9) Mutant Chronicles
This is one of the best sci-fi settings / backgrounds
of all time. The constant inner fighting between the
corporations combined with the ever present threat
of Dark Legion incursions has led to some epic struggles
and great games.
10) Legend of The Five Rings
I religiously bought everything that came out for
this, until the 2nd Edition was released, which I
found disappointing. The chance to play a samurai
and try out the code of Bushido was too good to miss
and with the Clan's and Shadlowlands it was a bit
like a medieval version of Mutant Chronicles.
Other Games of Note:
I felt I should also mention a few other games which
I would like to have included or will probably be
added at some point in the future after a few more
games. Star Trek is the first and foremost game that
springs to mind. Decipher have done a really good
job of keeping it suitably in touch with the TV series
and I look forward to spending many nights boldly
exploring... All Flesh Must Be Eaten spent a while
under consideration as well. With so many great films
(Evil Dead, 28 Days Later) to use as inspiration it
was a tough choice not to put it in somewhere. I have
a feeling that this will be the year of Judge Dredd
for me. I have had the rule book for a while and the
first games will be run over the coming months. It
looks good and I'm sure Mongoose can do great things
with such a strong license.
Roleplay Profile:
My first steps into gaming
were with a game called Space Crusade, from this I
went onto Games Workshops Warhammer 40,000 (in its
first edition back then). War gaming led me to a good
friend named Gareth Sumnall who introduced me to Rifts
and it all went from there. The first RPG I ever owned
was Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay. I still have this
original book, though I have invested in a new copy
as the old one is actually going a bit mouldy in places
due to a spillage many years ago (which makes it look
a bit like an ancient ledger but also makes touching
it a risky affair, it is now truly a book of Nurgle).
This love of roleplaying has led
to many late nights and early mornings, but most of
all fun, lots of fun with many good friends. I have
amassed a huge library of gaming books over the years,
ranging from older books like Mutant Chronicles and
Reich Star to a treasured Miskatonic University copy
of Call of Cthulhu (175 of 300).
Other Stuff:
The other loves of my life
are films, war gaming, reading and photography. Films
have always been one of my major weaknesses and many
hours of hard earned cash have gone towards my new
DVD collection. War gaming has always meant Games
Workshop to me really, but I’ve recently been
sampling games like Void and I’ve even had a
few Napoleonic battles (Sharpe’s fault).
Photography is my most recent interest
expansion, but also my first (if that makes any sense
at all???). You know when you’re a kid, and
everyone wants to be something when they grow up?
(I still do…) Well, I wanted to be a soldier
or a photographer, perhaps a war correspondent would
have been a good way to kill two orks with one slash,
but I was about 5 at the time and didn’t know
what one was. But alas I grew up and I’m neither
a soldier or a photographer, though both professions
still hold a lot of interest to me. So I’ve
got myself a decent camera and begun to learn the
ropes (or perhaps lenses), as for the soldiering bit,
maybe I’ll become a mercenary later in life
(Wild Geese style).
Favourite Films:
Zulu, Lawrence of Arabia, The Matrix,
Shrek, Gladiator, Black Hawk Down, Muppet Treasure
Island (don’t ask), Army of Darkness, The Good
The Bad & The Ugly, The Fifth Element, Seven Samurai,
Full Metal Jacket, The 13th Warrior, Dog Soldiers,
Pirates of The Caribbean, Equilibrium and Last Man
Standing.
Favourite Books:
All the Raymond E. Feist
novels (Magician and so on). Northern Lights, The
Subtle Knife and The Amber Spyglass by Phillip Pullman.
All of Terry Pratchett's Work – particularly
Pyramids, Interesting Times and The Fifth Elephant.
More recently the Bruce Cambell autobiography - If
Chins Could Kill: Confessions of a "B" Movie
Actor.
